His writing has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, McSweeney’s Quarterly, and The San Francisco Chronicle, among other outlets. From 2013-2019, he hosted and produced The Organist, an arts and culture podcast, for KCRW; he has also produced pieces for Radiolab and 99 Percent Invisible. He has been an editor at The Believer since 2003.

Carl Erik Fisher is an addiction physician, bioethicist, writer, and person in recovery. He is an assistant professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University. He is the author of the nonfiction book The Urge: Our History of Addiction, published by Penguin Press in January 2022 and named one of the best books of the year by both The New Yorker and The Boston Globe. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, Slate, Scientific American MIND, and elsewhere. Dr. Fisher also maintains a private psychiatry practice with a particular focus on psychotherapeutic approaches incorporating mindfulness and meditation. He is the host of the Flourishing After Addiction podcast, a deep-dive interview series exploring addiction and recovery, and he writes at the Substack newsletter Rat Park.
