Jane Hirshfield is an American poet, essayist, teacher, and lay-ordained practitioner of Zen for fifty years. Described in The New York Times Magazine as “writing some of the most important poetry in the world today,” she is a central spokesperson for the crises of biosphere and justice, and for the alliance of art, spiritual practice, and the sciences. Her writing appears in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The New York Review of Books, and many literary journals, and has been translated into seventeen languages; her animated TED-Ed lesson on metaphor has received 1.4 million views. The founder of Poets For Science in conjunction with the 2017 March for Science, and a former chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, in 2019 Hirshfield was elected into the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.  Her latest book is “The Asking: New and Selected Poems“
