This week we talk to Dr. David K Reynolds about Constructive Living

Dr. David K Reynolds is the creator of Constructive Living. Constructive Living is a Western approach to mental health education based in large part on adaptations of two Japanese psychotherapies, Morita therapy and Naikan therapy.

He is the author of Constructive Living, The Constructive Living Handbook and Water, Snow, Water: Constructive Living for Mental Health among many others.

In This Interview David and I Discuss…

  • The One You Feed parable.
  • The definition of Constructive Living.
  • The principles of Constructive Living.
  • How we are not responsible for anything we feel.
  • How we are all supported by many different factors, we do not do it on our own.
  • How we don’t have to feel like doing something to do it.
  • The focus on constructive living is about focusing on the doing.
  • The two major problems in western society.
  • How we don’t have to fix our feelings to take the actions.
  • That we can’t fix our feelings.
  • Most neurosis is caused by focus on the self and not the task at hand.
  • How “behavior wags the tail of feelings”
  • That “effort is good fortune”
  • Feelings don’t exist over time at the same intensity unless something comes along re-stimulate it.
  • We can be scared to death and still do it anyways.
  • The role emotions play and finding the middle ground between repression and indulgence.
  • How feelings are reality.
  • How people who don’t have their behavior under control tend to fear their feelings.
  • How Constructive Living is not easy.
  • The wisdom of breaking projects down into the smallest tasks we can.
  • There is a huge web of interdependence that supports everything we do.
  • Reality confidence.
  • Not leaving things undone that need done.
  • “Give and give up to the moment you walk away”
